Rating: T3 for my experience (official route T2). This was the most challenging hike I have done so far: sustained climbing, switchbacks, rocky terrain and the pressure of reaching Pizolhütte before the last cable car.

The Journey

I hiked with four friends, starting from Weisstannen at 08:00. The cool early-morning mountain air was refreshing, but almost immediately we began climbing on easy terrain toward Batöni.

At the Batöni Waterfall Arena, three principal waterfalls plunge from the cliffs: Piltschinabachfall (81 m), Sässbachfall (86 m) and Muttenbachfall (45 m). We spent about 15 minutes around the suspension bridge taking photographs. Near the first drop of the waterfall we also spotted a group of Alpine chamois moving across the precarious cliffs. They were too small to make out in the photograph, but clearly visible with the naked eye.

One of the dramatic falls at the Batöni Waterfall Arena — look closely at the cliff beside the waterfall, where Alpine chamois can be seen moving across the steep rock face.
The suspension bridge at Batöni, where we paused before the long climb.

Beyond Batöni the character of the hike changed completely. The ascent became steep and sustained as we traversed the mountain toward Lavtinasattel. We met very few hikers, mostly people walking in the opposite direction, and occasionally passed alpine farmers tending their cows. The solitude made the landscape feel even more immense.

Near the final mountain pass the trail became increasingly rocky and steep. Crossing Lavtinasattel, we were suddenly rewarded with the turquoise Wildsee below, together with its smaller heart-shaped neighbouring lake. By then the daytime visitors had largely disappeared; we saw only a small group of young hikers planning to camp near Wildsee.

Wildsee — a spectacular reward after the demanding climb over Lavtinasattel.

The descent toward Wildsee and the remaining route to Pizolhütte were still rocky and took longer than expected. Despite trying to reach the last cable car, we arrived at 17:15, well after its 16:00 departure.

We took our chance and approached a construction worker who was still at Pizolhütte to ask whether he was going down into the valley. He was, and very kindly gave us a lift. Later, our friend drove us to Dietlikon, and from there we continued home. After such a demanding day in the mountains, his kindness felt like an extraordinary gift.

The challenge made this hike unforgettable and deeply rewarding. The waterfalls, the chamois on the cliffs, the immense alpine landscape and Wildsee made it an experience I will remember for a lifetime.
