π The Experience
The glacier-fed Rosegbach accompanies much of the route. At times it flows quietly beside the trail; at other points the water rushes dramatically over rocks and small waterfalls.
The scenery develops gradually: forest β glacier river β open alpine valley β Bernina mountains and glaciers. The glacier starts appearing after roughly an hour and becomes increasingly impressive toward the upper valley.
We continued beyond Hotel Roseg Gletscher before turning around. That short extension was worthwhile because it gave us a much fuller view of the Roseg Glacier.
We also saw hikers with binoculars and long-lens cameras watching for birds and possible wildlife on the surrounding mountain slopes.
π² A Good Summer Walk
Our day was mostly cloudy, but much of the lower and middle valley runs through larch and stone-pine woodland. Even on a sunnier day, this should provide useful protection from direct sun. The upper valley becomes increasingly open as you approach the glacier.

π² Lunch & Horse Carriage
After our glacier extension, we returned to Hotel Roseg Gletscher for barley soup and drinks before heading to the horse carriage.
CHF 25 one way per adult
14:45 β ~15:45 Pontresina Bahnhof
The carriage ride became part of the experience itself. Three horses responded remarkably well to the young driverβs gentle instructions β running, slowing and stopping as directed.
π‘ Practical Tips
Follow the yellow signs from Pontresina station. The start is straightforward once you cross the street.
Enjoy the river, not only the destination. The waterfalls and glacier-fed Rosegbach are a major part of the walk.
Continue past Hotel Roseg Gletscher for the fuller glacier panorama.
Return by horse carriage. It avoids retracing the same route and adds something genuinely distinctive to the day.
